Longtime Ann Arbor business Treasure Mart listed for sale

I’m Carl Johns, my wife Elaine and I own
The Treasure Mart. And this coming April The Treasure Mart will have been an Ann
Arbor institution for 60 years and that’s, that’s saying a lot, because a lot
of businesses don’t make it that long. But we’re such a unique type operation
here in our consignment store that we’ve hung around that long. We do have
to sell the business right now and the property, but hopefully someone will
understand how important this is to Ann Arbor and they’ll take up the reins in
and keep the store running. It’s more like something you’d read about in a
book where it’s a very warm, very welcoming environment. Elaine and Carl
are just very very kind, very old-fashioned owners. They’re very
straightforward. Being in the DC area I’m used to being round duplicitous people,
with Carl and Elaine it’s all honesty and I really appreciate that. I am really
really going to miss the store having grown up in Ann Arbor, most of the
old-time businesses are being moved out and I appreciate that, I mean I know the
city’s growing and it’s getting bigger. The Ann Arbor I grew up with has been
long gone. Drakes closed in 1993 and that to me was the biggest loss up til now. And Treasure Mart will be a much much bigger loss in my life. It’s been a great
time being here at the store unfortunately we do have to move on
because of Elaine’s health. I’m not sure I’ll miss the job so much because I
think any time you spend a great length of time doing the same thing it
becomes a job. But the people here, they make it, they make it special. They make
you want to get up every day at 6 o’clock and get down here and just be
with the people. I’ve seen people here for 28 years that were coming when I
first started and they’re still coming now and you just develop this
relationship with those people that you can’t find anywhere else. And I think
Elaine and I both are gonna miss that more than more than anything.
