… STEVEN MEADOWS IS STEPPING DOWN AS SUPERINTENDENT. SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS ACCEPTED MEADOWS’ RESIGNATION TONIGHT AT A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION. WYMT’S MATTHEW RAND WAS THERE. HE JOINS US NOW FROM THE NEWSROOM. MATTHEW? TANNER … NEITHER THE SUPERINTENDENT NOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WOULD COMMENT ON CAMERA ABOUT MEADOWS’ RESIGNATION. MEADOWS DID TALK TO ME BEFORE TONIGHT’S MEETING AND SAID HIS DECISION WAS NOT DUE TO ANY ONE INCIDENT … BUT THAT THE TIME HAD SIMPLY COME TO LEAVE. School board attorney Michael Schmitt says Superintendent Meadows contacted him last week … Signalling his intention to resign. HE INDICATED THAT HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BOARD HAD BECOME UNCOMFORTABLE I THINK FOR BOTH PARTIES … AND THAT HE WOULD BE WILLING TO RESIGN AND PURSUE OPPORTUNITIES ELSEWHERE Meadows began his tenure as superintendent in July of 2013. His resignation took some district employees by surprise. I WISH IT COULD HAVE BEEN MAYBE A LITTLE MORE POSITIVE … MAYBE FOR BOTH THE BOARD AND HIM … BUT LIKE I SAID MAYBE IT WAS JUST LIKE YOU SAID LIKE A MARRIAGE THAT WENT BAD Schmitt did not go into details about what led to the departure … But says Meadows and the school board had different visions for the district. I THINK THAT WAS ESSENTIALLY MR. MEADOWS AND THE BOARD … SOME OF THE BOARD MEMBERS DID NOT SEE EYE TO EYE … AND THAT MADE THE WORKING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BOTH … DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE Board members agreed to grant Meadows a paid leave of absence beginning Tuesday and extending through his formal departure August 31st.
