Sale of five City-owned development sites to affordable housing providers in Calgary
Everybody needs a home. And housing security
does so much more than just providing shelter from the cold. It removes worry, it removes
stress, it allows people to invest in their lives and think about their future. Instead
of thinking about where I’m going to be tonight. We also see housing as one of the most important
building blocks for building stronger cities and stronger provinces. When you get stronger
cities and stronger provinces, by default, you get a much stronger Canada.
By meeting this critical need, families can focus on building their lives, providing for
their children. Making sure that they are being able to build their future.
The federal investment is going to be up to $48.5 million today. That’s the amount of
money we’re putting forward in partnership with The City of Calgary to realize new housing
opportunities in the city. We are today offering five new City-owned
sites to the non-profit sector at below market values for the development of affordable housing.
There are five development sites in the communities of Saddleridge, Seton, Highland Park, Banff
Trail, and Capitol Hill. There’s every reason to come back to Calgary
and to re-invest into new housing programs in the city. And to learn from the way in
which those housing dollars are spent so that all Canadians can benefit from the good work
that’s being done in this city. They can live that life that we’ve promised
to everyone on this land. That life of dignity, that life of belonging and that life of opportunity.
